Sooner or later, every senior student affairs
officer (SSAO) faces a change in institutional
leadership. At major research universities, small
private institutions, and community colleges,
SSAOs must prepare their divisions for change.
How can an SSAO successfully negotiate a
presidential transition, maintain the confidence
of the student affairs staff, and position
the division as a critical part of the campus
community? Based on personal experience,
two SSAOs provide strategies and tips for
maximizing the opportunities presented
by a change at the top.
